Terms of Service
Last updated: July 7, 2026
These Terms of Service (the "Terms") govern your access to and use of the Patu hosted service at patu.dev (the "Service"), operated by patu.dev ("we", "us"). By creating an account, using an API key, or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
1. The Service
Patu is a hosted API that optimizes images, SVG, JavaScript, CSS, fonts and container formats, and can store and serve the results through a content delivery network. We may add, change or remove features over time. The open-source components Patu is built on are governed by their own licenses and are not covered by these Terms.
2. Accounts and API keys
You need an account and an API key to use authenticated endpoints. You are responsible for keeping your key secret and for all activity under your account and key. Tell us promptly at hello@patu.dev if you believe your key has been exposed; you can also rotate it yourself from the dashboard. You must give accurate account information and be old enough to form a binding contract in your jurisdiction.
3. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- upload or process content that is unlawful, infringing, or that you do not have the right to process;
- use the Service to store or distribute malware, or content that is abusive or harmful;
- probe, overload, disrupt, or attempt to bypass the limits, rate limits, or security of the Service;
- resell or redistribute the Service beyond the scope of your plan; or
- use the Service in violation of applicable law or these Terms.
We may set and enforce technical limits (request size, rate, storage, monthly volume) that vary by plan.
4. Your content
You keep all rights to the files you send to the Service ("Your Content"). You grant us a limited, non-exclusive license to store, transcode, cache, and serve Your Content solely to provide the Service to you. You represent that you have the rights needed to send Your Content to us and to let us process it as described. You are responsible for Your Content and for having any consents required from the people it concerns.
5. Plans, billing and renewal
The Service offers a free tier and paid subscription plans. Paid plans are billed monthly in advance in euros through our payment processor, Stripe. Your subscription renews automatically each month until you cancel. You authorize us, through Stripe, to charge your payment method on each renewal. Prices and plan limits may change; we will give reasonable advance notice of a price increase, and it takes effect at your next renewal. Stated prices exclude any taxes that may apply, which are added where required.
6. Cancellation and refunds
You can cancel a paid plan at any time from the billing portal linked in your dashboard. Cancellation stops the next renewal; your plan stays active until the end of the current paid period, after which the account returns to the free tier. Refunds are handled as described in our Refund and Cancellation Policy.
7. Availability and changes
We work to keep the Service available and correct, but it is provided "as is" and "as available", without a guaranteed uptime unless a separate written service level agreement says otherwise. We may modify, suspend, or discontinue parts of the Service, and will try to give notice of material changes that affect you.
8. Suspension and termination
We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these Terms, fail to pay, or use the Service in a way that harms it or other users. You may stop using the Service and close your account at any time. On termination, your right to use the Service ends. Stored assets may be deleted after termination; export anything you need before you cancel or close your account. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (for example, content rights, disclaimers, limitation of liability, and governing law) continue to apply.
9. Disclaimers
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Service is provided without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, and that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free. Optimization aims to reduce file size while preserving quality, but you are responsible for verifying that the output meets your needs before you rely on it.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenue, data, or goodwill. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the amount you paid us for the Service in the three months before the event giving rise to the claim. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded under applicable law, including your statutory rights as a consumer.
11. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. If a change is material, we will give reasonable notice, for example by email or a notice on the site. Continuing to use the Service after a change takes effect means you accept the updated Terms.
12. Governing law
These Terms are governed by French law, and disputes are subject to the competent French courts, without affecting any mandatory consumer protections you have where you live.
